I've recently gone minimal with my beauty routine (I'm trying really hard do the same to my closet). In addition to giving up most of my makeup, I also gave up buying body care such as lotions and face wash. Simplifying has been liberating and there are so many reasons to do so.
Most beauty and body care products are filled with toxins. Most might overlook this if they don't have an obvious reaction. The holistic world often references your "toxic bucket". All the exposures to various toxins (stress included) get added to your bucket until it finally overflows. So even small doses of toxins matter. Your daily lipsticks, spray of hairspray and face wash contribute to the bucket. So while you may not feel sensitive to the face wash, it could be a contributing factor to your allergies or other health issues.
The other option is to buy organic products. There are lot's of options these days and unfortunately they come at a greater cost to your wallet.
And what about the unnecessary accumulation of STUFF in one's life? I was a VIP member at Sephora for years (you have to spend over $350 a year). I loved collecting products and my drawers were filled with more than I could handle.
And then I became pregnant with my second. It was time to purge and go organic.
Meet the only product one really needs: Coconut oil. I was already using coconut oil for lotion, hair serum, as well as cooking. I had managed to purge most of my makeup when I came across an Oil Cleansing article by Wellness Mama. I thought I would give it a shot. She mentioned you need a few weeks for your skin to adjust. Mine took a month. You can play with different oils for your skin type. What is great about oil cleansing? It works better than any makeup remover I have ever had. It's also great for traveling. Everyone has either coconut or olive oil in their house. And it surprisingly turned my nighttime routine into a more spa like experience. I love putting a hot towel on my face and just taking a pause from the world..
I also love the idea of sharing products with my babies. Coconut oil has antimicrobial properties and was our go-to daily product for our newborn.
I really recommend making the change. Throw it all out and start over with just a jar of oil. You can buy bulk from Costco. Put some in a small mason jar to keep in your bathroom for all your bathroom needs and another small mason jar in the bedroom for, well, all your bedroom needs. Your wallet and skin with thank you.
Have you tried oil cleansing before? How did it go?
